Microblog.pub a minimalist ActivityPub server
Kinda nice that it is also accessible via Gemini it seems.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/476057 > The activity of the SocialHub community, like all other 'fediverse-substrate' bodies, has waned. From an active community to just a forum. Now a decision has to be made for the future of SocialHub. The options are stopping, be just a forum, or revitalize a vibrant community. The last option needs people willing and committed to do so. To step up for the sake of Fediverse Futures.

CHOKEPOINT CAPITALISM
How Big Tech and Big Content Captured Creative Labor Markets and How We'll Win Them Back Authors:Rebecca Giblin,Cory Doctorow DescriptionPraise and ReviewsTable of ContentsReader Reviews A call to action for the creative class and labor movement to rally against the power of Big Tech and Big Media Corporate concentration has breached the stratosphere, as have corporate profits. An ever-expanding constellation of industries are now monopolies (where sellers have excessive power over buyers) or monopsonies (where buyers hold the whip hand over sellers)—or both. In Chokepoint Capitalism, scholar Rebecca Giblin and writer and activist Cory Doctorow argue we’re in a new era of “chokepoint capitalism,” with exploitative businesses creating insurmountable barriers to competition that enable them to capture value that should rightfully go to others. All workers are weakened by this, but the problem is especially well-illustrated by the plight of creative workers. From Amazon’s use of digital rights management and bundling to radically change the economics of book publishing, to Google and Facebook’s siphoning away of ad revenues from news media, and the Big Three record labels’ use of inordinately long contracts to up their own margins at the cost of artists, chokepoints are everywhere. By analyzing book publishing and news, live music and music streaming, screenwriting, radio and more, Giblin and Doctorow deftly show how powerful corporations construct “anti-competitive flywheels” designed to lock in users and suppliers, make their markets hostile to new entrants, and then force workers and suppliers to accept unfairly low prices. In the book’s second half, Giblin and Doctorow then explain how to batter through those chokepoints, with tools ranging from transparency rights to collective action and ownership, radical interoperability, contract terminations, job guarantees, and minimum wages for creative work. Chokepoint Capitalism is a call to workers of all sectors to unite to help smash these chokepoints and take back the power and profit that’s being heisted away—before it’s too late.

What's the fediverse equivalent to art and literature sharing sites like Deviantart and Wattpad?
I like the concepts of both platforms, Deviantart and Wattpad, but both have been going down the tubes, and the argument can be made that they have *always* had a pretty big cringe problem. Is there a platform or platforms more geared toward artists and/or writers like either of those two centralized sites? Pixelfed maybe? But I get the impression that it's more Instagram as opposed to Deviantart. Writefreely for Wattpad? Are either very similar to those centralized sites at all?

Is there a fediverse platform similar to Tumblr?
I think Tumblr has a pretty unique style in terms of how it works. Even though it's completely centralised, it already *almost* feels like it's federated. So is there an actual fediverse platform that's similar to it?

The Verge removed (some) pro pixelfed comments and I don't know why
As a fan of pixelfed I occasionally checkout to see if it is causing any buzz on comments, generally around instagram-is-doing-something-bad posts. The verge posted [this article](https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/26/23279815/instagram-feed-kardashians-criticism-fuck-it-im-out) and there were some pro pixelfed comments that have been removed. ![comment1 - the post under supermassive no longer exists ](https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/bd5fbc2e-d61e-4a70-9bd5-3c3213c83b64.jpeg) ![comment2](https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/13d4fb83-1a99-45e6-b76f-822f55b10ba9.jpeg) There is still one comment, which is a simple link to the .org. But I don't see why the comments were removed unless they were auto flagged as bot-spam perhaps. Yet other comments pimping and linking to other options remain. ![Links to other](https://sopuli.xyz/pictrs/image/556fb9fa-56b9-4693-9b4e-800df5132c75.jpeg) Makes me a bit grumpy, with all the work Dansup has been putting in.

Need help choosing a Funkwhale (and other fediverse) instance(s)
I am looking to just dip my toes on a couple of other platforms. What I am finding while trying to choose an instance for Funkwhale (or Friendica, Pixelfed, etc) is that there is very little in the way of descriptions for finding something to match me and I would just be choosing at random. I am using the official sites' server recommendations/lists to look through and am really getting no info that is helpful to me. Does anyone know of other resources? My best option at this point is to use a throw away account to get on any server then spend just enough time interacting to find a good one and try to join it. Does that seem reasonable?
